We don’t get much love from some of our favorite news/media sources, but we are about to give them some anyway. We read a lot of Crain’s, MetroMode, ModelD and Concentrate. Recently in a featured story on Concentrate, they put us on to something we forgot for a while; Detroit’s seemingly low-key trendiness. Arguable would probably be a good word to sprinkle throughout this article, but we’re about to argue for the bright side (go figure).
From the airport, to the mall, to the outlets to the shy store fronts in sometimes unwelcoming areas, Detroit has no shortage of fashionably conscious product. There are fashion shows, incubators, fairs, schools and much more. Don’t hate just because you don’t know about them.
Want proof? We can’t say we are completely in-the-know, but we know a little bit:
1.
Troy’s Joe Faris is competing for a number of prizes on this season’s Project Runway on Bravo. His fashion must? A basic black t-shirt. Rock on. (Detroit is reppin' in these reality competitions, read about A.S.I.I.D here)
2.
Dolce Moda has not only left a mark locally, but globally. Ranked as one of the top boutiques in the world by Vogue Italia, Dolce Moda is a reason people have made Royal Oak the place to be.
3.
Auburn Hill’s based Pelle Pelle was recently honored by some of hip-hop’s founders, when it was asked to design a studded leather jacket for Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. The group wore the jacket during their induction into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame. Pelle Pelle will also be featured in the 2009 major motion picture, “Notorious,” chronicling the life of rap artist Biggie Smalls.
4.
Detroit knows shoes. Derrick Coleman sent that message when he recently opened a new sneaker shop called Snyx in Detroit. But the reigning local sneaker shop title holder is just outside of Ann Arbor. Ypsilanti’s Puffer Red’s was selected as 1 of 4 retail locations in the nation to celebrate the anniversary of Adidas’ iconic Forum sneaker. See the below video for some footage.
Now, you know where to spend your stimulus checks.
