Illitch's Opportunity Cost, Detroit's Benefit

In Illitch's show of support, lies hope for our future

Posted April 27th, 2009 by 313rd

Here's what happened. GM couldn't pay for their sign in centerfield at Comerica Park. Mike Illitch, owner of the Tigers, stepped up to the plate and decided to keep the sign up at no cost to GM. He also hoisted the logos of Chrysler and Ford just over a line that reads "The Detroit Tigers Support Our Automakers."

They do. We definitely do. You should too.

Some of you who may not understand the extent of this show of support should know that after hearing that GM was discontinuing their sponsorship, other companies bid 1.5 to 2 millions dollars for the same spot, over the next few years. He refused, and put up 2 others at no cost.

Therein lies the spirit of Detroit. On behalf of all others who hope for a speedy recovery in Detroit - thank you Mike Illitch.

Wait - we're not done. We'd like to make clear that Illitch is not dumb. He knows that healthier automakers means a healthier Detroit, more jobs, and happier Detroiters. This also means he can continue to fill seats at Comerica Park, Joe Louis, the Masonic Tempe, the Fox Theatre and his wife's beautiful Motor City Casino. This was an investment as much as it was a donation. But since his investment's upside is a function of Detroit jobs - we're all happy.

Go Tigers! Go Wings!
